CHALLENGE

TriNetX was facing low adoption and unclear differentiation of its platform among healthcare organization (HCO) partners—particularly around the underutilized “Linked” functionality—prompting a need to better understand user perceptions, unmet needs, and barriers to value realization.

RESULT

The research uncovered key friction points across communication, usability, and data workflows that limited platform adoption and hindered HCOs from realizing the full value of TriNetX—particularly around the underutilized Linked feature. These findings led to clear, actionable recommendations to streamline core tasks, reduce training burdens, and better align the platform with users’ day-to-day workflows.

IMPACT

This would significantly improve platform engagement, drive adoption of the Linked functionality, and strengthen TriNetX’s value proposition by enabling faster trial feasibility, improved sponsor-HCO collaboration, and greater visibility into research outcomes.

Immersion

To gain a clear understanding of TriNetX’s business model, I began by creating an ecosystem map that visualized how different user groups engage with the platform, their workflows, and the interdependencies across business sectors. This helped identify key touchpoints, pain points, and opportunities for alignment, ultimately informing a more holistic and targeted research approach.

Competitor Analysis

I identified competitors in the market to compare and contrast the different capabilities provided by TriNetX.

While TrinetX was leading in a variety of therapeutic areas, the most evident gap was in clinical decision support, which most of its rivals already provided, presenting an opportunity for them to expand into.

Key Insights

Communication gaps create challenges to quantify and attribute impact

HCOs are reluctant to invest in additional data access without transparency

The platform is not intuitive, creating a barrier to entry for more engagement

Accessing linked data sets is not a priority; additional data sets may be more attractive

Data handling complexities result in a cumbersome experience

Ideation Session

I led an ideation workshop with product, design, and engineering to identify opportunities across key pain points. We used divergent thinking to generate and cluster ideas, then prioritized them in a 2x2 matrix based on impact and roadmap alignment. This process led to a focused set of recommendations to strengthen TriNetX’s value proposition.

Design Direction

To improve the product and enhance the users experience, I provided strategic, actionable insights based on the research findings that address the research objectives.

Impact

By implementing these recommendations, TriNetX would -

  • Help demonstrate ROI to TriNetX members

  • Help improve opportunity-to-site matching which benefits sponsors and HCOs

  • Reduces HCO burden to drive adoption and usage of platform

  • Expands Linked feature use cases and value to HCOs

  • Adds hard-to-obtain but highly desired data sets

  • Help users do common tasks easily
